On the 21st of January 1907, after having carried the role of Nora for the last time, Véronique de Coulanges rushed round to her dressing-room.
She went behind her screen and, without even noticing that Oskar Serti had arrived, she threw off her dress, the last vestige of a character who had so taken over her life over the last two months that she was longing to see the world once more with her own eyes.
Suddenly, Véronique saw her dress, which she had thrown over the screen a few moments earlier, sliding down the other side, to fall on the floor with a dull thud. She imagined the terrible weight of everything that could remind her of the role being taken from her and was not unduly worried about the strangeness of the phenomenon.
Unfortunately, despite all her hopes, when she had finally rid herself of her costumes, Véronique felt completely disarmed, as if her very substance had been emptied out. Then the world seemed so pallid that she waited with impatience fot the arrival of her dear Oskar so that she could take refuge in his very personal world.
