On the 21st of January 1907, during the last performance of La Maison de Poupée, Oskar Serti saw Véronique de Coulanges in her dressing-room; she had just played for the last time the unforgettable Nora. While Véronique was removing her costume behind her screen, his heart missed a beat as he suddenly saw Nora’s dress thrown up in the air. This burst of life touched him so profoundly that when the dress fell back upon the edge of the screen, one sleeve dangling, he wanted it never to stop moving. Hoping not to draw Véronique’s attention to his curious trick, Serti crept up to the dress and began continuously to blow the sleeve so that it would go on swinging for ever.
However, after some minutes of this activity, he started running out of breath and his head began to spin. Feeling himself about to faint he desperately made a grap for the sleeve, but could not avoid falling down.
When he came round, entangled in Nora’s dress, Serti had the impression that Véronique was not the slightest bit concerned about him. He attributed her attitude to the fact that perhaps she had become jealous for her own role.
